Obituary

Florence L. (Thompson) Shroyer was born in Benton County, Iowa on August 19, 1911. She was the daughter of Walter E. and Nellie M.(Waltersdorf) Thompson. After graduating from high school in Muscatine,IA, Florence married Scott E. Shroyer in Galena, IL on April 3, 1933. Scott passed away in 1976. The Shroyers' lived in Galena, IL the majority of their married lives. During WWII Scott was wounded and Florence became his primary caretaker at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and Percy Jones Army Medical Hospital from 1945 thru 1949. After Scott's discharge from the Army the couple involved themselves with the Shrine,Disabled American Veterans and American Legion. Florence held the office of the President of the Canton American Auxiliary as well as leading school PTA's. The couple loved to travel, making trips to California to see relatives, and many Regional and National Conventions of the DAV. Following Scott's retirement from International Harvested they moved to Sun City,AZ and travled throughout the western U.S. and one summer long trip to Alaska. Florence had a life-long interest in sewing, cooking and knitting, and took great pride in her handcrafted items which she created for her family. She also assited with programs for the Navajo children of Arizona and enjoyed watching many sports programs. Mrs. Shroyer served her community wherever she lived. She was involved in the Canton Baptist Church, Homemakers'Club, Graham Hospital Voluntary Group and Senior Citizens' Centers in both Springfield, MO and Sun City,AZ. Scott and Florence raised two sons, Larry and Lee. Larry, for eight years lived with his mother until his passing in 1984. Florence was a grandmother to Debbie Kruzan, Todd Shroyer and Allyson Faucett, and three great grandchildren. She was also a sister to three girls and one brother, three of whom have preceded her in death. One sister,Eloise(husband Floyd)Dougherty still resides in Escondido, CA. Visitation will be on Tuesday March 25, at the Porter Funeral in Jamestown from 7:00 until 9:00pm with a Funeral Service on Tuesday evening at 8:45pm. Burial will be in the White Chapel Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Canton, IL. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Walter Reed Veterans' Children Toy Drive at the State Bank of Lizton, 33 Brush St. Jamestown, In 46147.
